Types of Eyeliner

There are various eye lining products differing in texture and composition. Broadly they can be classified into six different types:

Kohl eyeliner: One of the oldest types of eye lining products rooting from the ancient times in various forms. They are also known as kajal eyeliner and were widely used in Ancient India, Egypt, and Mesopotamia. It is a kind of soft powder available in dark matte shades. Because of their fine powder form, they are easy to smudge. They are available in pressed powder or loose powder form, and even as pencils.

Liquid eyeliner: These types of eyeliners are available as an opaque liquid. They are often waterproof eyeliners and thus a game-changer in the fashion industry. They usually come in small quantities and can be applied with a small sharp-tipped brush. As the thin-tipped applicator brush gives you sharp strokes, it helps create a thin line and thus is best used to create winged eyeliner. 

Eyeliner pencil: It is one of the most common eye lining makeup supplied as a wood pencil. It is generally available in the dark, matte shades.

Wax-based eye pencils:  As the name signifies, they contain wax which facilitates easy application. They are available in various unique colours and shades, such as white or beige. Wax-based eye makeup products can also come in a cone or a compact with a brush applicator.

Gel eyeliner: It is much softer than kohl and is available as a gel liner. They are available as waterproof gel eyeliner too. It can be easily applied with a brush. 

Shimmer Liner: They are one of the most popular types as they offer a wide variety of options to choose from. They are available in different bright colours and can be applied on the upper as well as lower eyelids.

How to Apply Eyeliner

• First, ensure that you cleanse your face and eyes gently with a mild cleanser. Pat dry with a microfibre towel and proceed to the next step. Tone your face and apply a coin-sized portion of face moisturiser to your face. Ensure that you put nourishing eye cream on your eyes. 
• You can either put on some primer followed by base makeup and then proceed with the liner or directly wear the liner for a casual makeup look. 
• Take the eye liquid liner or gel or stick and start with small strokes to form the basic structure of the outline and keep it symmetrical. Avoid creating bold strokes, or they get smudged easily.
• Boost your eyes' volume and look with a few mascara strokes on your lashes to look like a diva.

Can eyeliners be used for brown eyes?

There are liners for all eye colours. You can complement your eye colour with any shade you want. The choice is yours. 

Can one wear eyeliner as a lipliner?

It is unclean to use an eye product in your mouth and interchange the products as it will carry unwanted bacteria from your mouth to your eyes. Thus, if you use eyeliner on your lips, do not use it again on your eyes. 

Do you apply liner on the eye first or last?

Always complete your base makeup like primer, concealer, eyeshadow, etc., and then wear the liner to get a clean and sharp wing that lasts all day. 

Can one wear the liner with contact lenses on?

The only precaution you must take is to avoid wearing a thick liner coat on your eyelids. You should also avoid putting the liner in the waterline to prevent irritation to your eyes. Avoid getting the liner from touching the contact lenses.
