Vitamin B3 is most often used for the treatment of acne-prone and oily skin, as it has proven sebum balancing effects. It also lowers the degree of acne inflammation and pustule formation. Even though it is a common ingredient in oily skin products, it is very beneficial in dry and mature skin care. It stimulates ceramide and free fatty acid synthesis and thus strengthens the lipid barrier and lowers trans epidermal water loss(TEWL). It also helps to smooth fine lines and increases skin elasticity. it inhibits the activity of tyrosinase (an enzyme involved in melanin production) and helps in lightening dark spots & pigmentation.
